FAR EAST FLEET
w No Increases Since Crisis” Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 1. There had been no buildup of the Far East Fleet since the Indonesian crisis, nor would there be any in the future, said the First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sir David Luce, at a news conference today. He added that there were a large number of men and ships east of Suez, and they could be deployed to a .trouble spot as the occasion demanded. He agreed that the Indonesian crisis had been discussed with the New Zealand defence staff, but declined to elaborate other than to say that “matters of mutual interest were discussed and views exchanged.” “No comment” was his quick answer to the question on whether Britain had put any pressure on New Zealand to make a greater contribution to the defence of Malaysia.
