BENMORE TESTS

Waitaki River Warning It will be dangerous to cross any channel of the Waitaki, Tekapo, or Pukaki riverbeds from tomorrow until Monday (inclusive) below lakes Tekapo and Pukaki, while the Ministry of Works and the New Zealand Electricity Department are carrying out river-flow tests, the project engineer of the Benmore hydro-electric scheme (Mr G. A. Tait) said yesterday. The object of the tests is to obtain data for planning the Benmore lake filling programme, scheduled for the end of the year. The flow from lakes Pukaki and Tekapo will be shut off to simulate conditions at the Waitaki power station when the Waitaki is blocked off at Benmore. The flow of the river will therefore be greatly reduced, especially below the dam. But the necessity may arise for a much increased flow to be permitted, and this may be done suddenly. The public are therefore warned that the crossing of low-flowing or dry channels could be very dangerous,” said Mr Tait. Farmers are reminded that stock likely to be endangered, or which may stray on to the riverbed, should be removed.” I
