PRICES FOR WHEAT
13s 6d SI; 15s6d NJ. (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Feb. 28. The prices to be paid to farmers for wheat grown in New Zealand for the 1956 wheat harvest will be 13s 6d a bushel in the South Island and 15s 6d a bushel in the North Island, said the associate Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Shelton) today. The premium of 2s a bushel for Hilgendorf wheat and the discount of 3d a bushel on Arawa will be continued. In addition, the present rates payable to farmers for storage of wheat will be maintained. In reaching this decision the Government had given careful consideration to representations made by the United Wheat Growers' Organisation and the Dominion agriculture section of Federated Farmers, sand Mr Shelton but had decided to maintain the present prices for the 1965 harvest
"Further consideration of the wheatgrowers’ representations will be given in conjunction with the study, currently proceeding, of the finding of the committee of inquiry into the wheat, flour and bread industries, “This will ensure that an early indication can be given to wheatgnowers of the prices to be paid for the 1965-66 harvest,” said the Minister.
