PUBLICITY IN JAPAN

“Little Known Of N.Z." (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. I Little of New Zealand is, known in Japan, according to Mr Yoshiro Yamamoto, managing-director of a mountain hotel near Tokyo. Though he knew of New Zealand through its butter—at 6s a pound—he found it difficult to obtain information about the country, he said today. Mr Yamamoto is here for discussions with travel and airline agents to help foster tourist traffic between New Zealand and Japan. Later this week he will go to Australia for Pacific Area Travel Association conferences in Sydney and Melbourne. He predicted an upsurge of Japanese tourists in the South Pacific after April—the result of a Japanese Government move to make foreign exchange available to travellers.

The 10 per cent tax now paid on accommodation and meals in Japan would be removed for a trial period from July to November and might never be reintroduced, said Mr Yamamoto.
