RULINGS DIFFER
Marching Team
Loses
A different interpretation of the about turn ruling by one judge deprived the Downings Red Robins senior marching team of a second placing in the South Island championship . at ' Tahuna Park, Dunedin, on Saturday. The number four field judge (Mrs G. Telfer) claimed that the team was taking too long a pause in the execution of the turn, but it is claimed that there is nothing in the New Zealand Marching Handbook to support this. Downings Red Robins’ leader, Jill Foster, who has made a comeback after three years out of marching, was also deprived of her first South Island champion leader title because of the ruling. Her points were 80, six more than the leader of Blair Atholl (Otago). Downings Red Robins recorded 722 deductions, one less than Philips Hi-Z, another Canterbury team, which received the runner-up placing. Had Downings Red Robins received placings, it would have been third in the aggregate, also, with 806 deductions.
A protest against the ruling is being lodged to the executive of the New Zealand Marching Association which will meet in' a week’s time in Wellington. The official results of the contest are:— Championship.—Blair Atholl (Otago), 650 deductions, 1; Philips Hi-Z (Canterbury), 723, 2; Cresta Guards (Southland), 743, 3.
