SURFER FOR DUNEDIN
McDowell Goes From Waimairi
One of Canterbury’s most promising young surfers, R. (Sandy) McDowell, a member of the Waimairi Surf Life-saving' Club, has moved to Dunedin where he will be attending the . School of Mines. McDowell recently received considerable publicity for his efforts at rescuing the victim of the fatal shark attack at St. Clair Beach, Dunedin. In order to compete at the Canterbury champion-
ships on Saturday and Sunday, he delayed his departure until the last possible moment. He competed in the senior surf race championship on Sunday afternoon and left immediately afterwards. He was not placed in the event. McDowell has joined the ’St. Clair club in Dunedin and is expected to represent it in a carnival next week-end.
The departure of. McDowell is a considerable loss to Canterbury. •As a junior he represented ’ Canterbury threetimes and won the junior surf race at ’the Royal interprovincial ' carnival last season. He has held the junior surf ski rescue • title, the junior surf ski title, and the junior’paddle-board title, and has been runner-up in both the surf ski and the surf ski rescue junior events. ’ This season, his first as a senior, he reached the final of the senior belt championship and finished second, in the. senior surf ski rescue championship. He is also ’ a former Cook Strait aspirant, giving up his attempt when B. Devenport successfully swam the strait.
