TELEPHONE CONTRACT
Tenders Called For Belfast
Tenders for a cabling contract which will eliminate the telephone waiting-list in the Belfast exchange area and provide a batter service in Spencerville and Brooklands through a new exchange at Spencerville have been called by the Posit Office. A 400-line extension to the Bedfast exchange, where about 100 were waiting for service, was now being installed, and plans were ready for the new Spencerville exchange, the regional engineer (Mr L. D. Bewley) said yesterday. It was hoped the whole operation would be completed by August when the changeover to six-figure dialling in the centrad city area was planned, he said: ■
Th e - Spencerville exchange would be linked with the Christchurch system by a dialling prefix, as Belfast already was, Mr Bewley said. The new system would allow the elimination of the multiparty lines now common in the area. ' Most of the subscribers would be offered individual or two-party service.
