Hospital Waiting Lists

Sir, —Sheep-like, the taxpayers of Christchurch accept inadequate surgical services. Doubtless lists running into thousands suit some surgeons. It is profitable to encourage patients to undergo private surgery rather than endure their miseries for a year or more. Much of the complacency of public and sugeons alike stems .from the misconception that public hospital services are free. In reality, the patient has paid handsomely for both hospital and surgeon. Unfortunately the board attempts to co-ordinate a motley collection of interested parties, all capable of exerting considerable and conflicting pressures. The resultant over-all planning is ponderous, indecisive, and inadequate. The board would do well to call in a firm of management consultants with a mandate to reorganise such hospital services as are needed to give the public the attention they have paid to receive.— Yours, etc., J. S. POLLARD. February 15, 1964.
