RACING N. Eastwood Engaged For Hogan Team

The Riccarton light-weight, N. Eastwood, travels far and often for his race riding. Last Saturday he was at Te Rapa and rode Tilka in the Royal Waikato Cup. This week he will go to Wingatui and will ride three members of W. P. Hogan’s team on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s autumn meeting.

Eastwood will ride Sailorman in the Otago Handicap, Double in the Autumn Handicap, and Cranleigh in the Dunedin Handicap, for two-year-olds. Sailorman and Double will be a fairly popular combination for their races, which form the T.A.B. double, and Cranleigh will probably be favourite in the Dunedin Handicap after a good second to his stablemate Stageland in the Middle Park Plate at the C.J.C. summer meeting recently. Sailorman and Double also raced at Riccarton. Sailorman was third in the Midsummer Handicap, but Double lost a winning chance with a slow start in the Craven Plate.

Cumberland (Central Improvers’ Handicap) will be another of N. Eastwood’s mounts at Wingatui on Saturday. This four-year-old from Riccarton broke through for a first win at the Kurow meeting on January 4, and he should not be hard to place to advantage in hack fields. Winning Stable He is trained by N. Cowles, who won with Race Guide and Marlow at the Westport meeting at the week-end, but did his early racing for the late Mr G. J. Barton and from the Wingatui stable of D. G. O’Neill. Marlow is also an acceptor for the first day of the Dunedin meeting, but is unlikely to start.

Cowles might take him south for the second day at Wingatui. Cumberland had his race rider up in a five-furlong sprint about 40ft out on the course proper at Riccarton yesterday. Mr N. A. Syme’s chestnut recorded 53 3-ssec for the last half mile. Fast Sprint The fastest time for half a mile on the outside of the course proper was 49 2-ssec, recorded by Barwood with A. Martin up. It was a good gallop by any standards, and very good for a hack.

Hullabaloo, A. H. Eastwood’s mount in the Otago Handicap on Saturday, was ridden by C. T. Wilson when tried over nine furlongs. He ran the distance in 2min 2 3-ssec and the last half-mile in 54 2-ssec. Valuate (P. King) was a length better than Bodkin (Reriti) after running seven furlongs in lmin 30 2-ssec, and the final four in 51 3-ssec. liiluate also had the outside running. On his race form Bodkin stands a good chance in the intermediate race at Wingatui. He was fourth at his last start in the Craven Plate for open sprinters at Riccarton. Standout (Stokes) and Hushaway (Wildermoth), two of the earliest workers on the course, ran their last halfmile in 53 3-ssec. Hushaway shaded his stablemate. Vitamise (N. Eastwood) recorded 54 2-ssec for his halfmile. He galloped soon after Arleigh (M. Skelton) and Mutch (Wildermoth), which took 55 l-ssec. Kumara Trial Lady York (A. H. Eastwood), which is going to Kumara, sprinted seven furlongs in lmin 33sec, the last half-mile in 53 2-ssec. Magician (M. Skelton) recorded 53 2-ssec for half a mile and 39 4-ssec for the final three furlongs. K. J. Thomson is preparing him for another campaign at Trentham.

Candida (Low) ran seven furlongs, the last four in 54sec. She looks well but has done nothing noteworthy so far this season.

Polly’s Pal (A. H. Eastwood) ran in from the three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. She ricked herself a little over a week ago, but recovered quickly and should be fit to run on the second day of the Dunedin meeting. Keen Run

Bagful (W. Martin) and Lucky Crown (Penrose) sprinted keenly under lightweights oh the plough. They recorded lmin 1 3-ssec for five furlongs, 48 2-ssec for the last four, and 36 2-5 sec for the final three.

After a slow first furlong Beau Seant (Stokes) and Town Talk (Campbell) did fairly well to run six furlongs in lmin 19 4-ssec, the last four in 51 2-ssec. The stablemates, Jayess (A. H. Eastwood) and Printer (N.

Eastwood), ran five furlongs in lmin 2 2-ssec, and the last three in 38 4-ssec. Smuggler’s Bank (Messent) and Ikanui (Brunning) were abreast after running half a mile in 50 4-ssec, and the last three furlongs in 37 2-5 sec.

Seaend (Miss F. Kerr) moved well while running half a mile in 52 4-ssec. Her stablemate and half-sister, Depending (Low), followed over three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. Shakes (Brunning) and Pay Bank (Messent) dashed in from the three furlongs in 36 4-ssec.

Shipmate (Stokes) was keen to quicken while doing easy work on the plough. He ran his last three furlongs under a strong hold in 44sec. Champ (C. T. Wilson) and Zinder (Stokes) sprinted half a mile in 49 3-ssec.
