Equipment For Harewood
The Government has approved the allocation of £23,990 for preparation of. the sites for tbe instrument landing system at the ends of the, two runways at the Christchurch airport. The first of the equipment has arrived at Lyttelton. The I.L.S. equipment is the first part of the navigational aids to be installed at Harewood to bring the airport Up to full international jet standards. The whole project is estimated to cost £400,000.
“This is evidence that the Government is going on with the job,” said Cr. A. R. Guthrey, chairman of the City Council's airport committee, last evening. He had had some fears that Christchurch might have to wait until nearer the time when Mangere was ready. The I.L.S. should be ready for operation in spring of this year, Cr. Guthrey said. It should be sufficient for the Boeing 707, service which it was hoped would be able to operate into Christchurch then-
