SHARKS OFF BEACHES

Warning At Waikuku

Residents and holiday-mak-ers at Waikuku were warned yesterday of the presence of sharks off the beach.

The pilot of an . N.A.C freighter flying between Christchurch and Wellington saw nine sharks about a mile and a half off Waikuku beach at 1.30 p.m. He estimated their length as about sft. About 30 sharks were seen between Christchurch and Motunau.

The sightings were reported to Christchurch, and warnings were broadcast by radio during the afternoon.

Constable J. B. Gott, of Rangiora. went to Waikuku and warned residents not to swim. Although persons went on to the beach and climbed sandhills for a vantage point they were unable to catch a glimpse of the sharks.
