By Rail To Show The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) and Lady Fergusson left Auckland last evening in the Vice-Regal car attached to the Limited express. Their Excellencies will live in the car at Ohakune while they attend the Waimarino' show at Raetihi. They are due to return to Auckland on Thursday. Walking Tour Alexei Polikarpov, a 65-year-old Siberian pensioner, has arrived in Termez, Uzbekistan, after covering 15,845 miles on foot in the Soviet Union, Tass reports. Polikarpov intends to cover about 24,850 miles and finish his journey in the Far East. He is collecting material- for a book which he is going to call “One Hundred Million Steps in My Homeland.” •(Moscow, February 18.)

Marina Refused The Christchurch Drainage Board was asked last evening if an area bordering the Estuary could be bought or leased as a site for a home or a public yachting marina—restaurant or both. After the construction committee had reported that the area was near the board’s main outfall, the board declined tire application. Shark Catches ■ Thresher sharks weighing 5601 b and 4001 b were ■ caught at the week-end by Messrs Gaynor Jackson and John Clegg, members of the Kawau Island Deep Sea Fishing Club.. Harbour Board Flag

The Auckland Harbour Board is now the first in the country to have its own working ensign flying, from its ships officially. The new ensign is a New Zealand flag combined with the shield from the board’s coat of arms. The general manager, M r A. C. Clarke, said-that until now the board had been precluded by law from flying any flag but the Red Ensign. Heat Reached 78 The temperature stayed in the seventies for most of the day in Christchurch yesterday, with a maximum of 78 degrees, recorded at the airport The sky was slightly cloudy, as on a nor’-west day, but the wind was a light north-easterly. The temperature was 66 degrees at 9 a.m. and- had reached 77 by 10 a.m. It stayed near 78 in the afternoon but dropped to 74 at 4 p.m There were a few spots of rain at intervals. The humidity was low, near 40 per cent for most of the day. " Anti-Fly Display A display in support of the Health Department’s anti-fly campaign is on view in one of the windows of Beath and Company, Ltd. The display features the children’s poster competition being run in connexion with the campaign. The competition will close on Monday.

Smokers’ Clinic The second clinic for those who want to stop smoking will be held by the Seventhday Adventist Church during evenings from Saturday until Wednesday in the Mayfair Lounge. So far about 60 have booked for the course. Of the 60 who started the first course, 45 completed it. Learning To Swim The normal time-table of the Glenmore School is suspended this week while the school’s 400 or so pupils take part in a learn-to-swim campaign. The Canterbury Car Club will hold a hill climb in Lyttelton on March 14. Hawkhurst road. Selwyn parade, and Selwyn terrace will be closed from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. while the event takes place.
