'N.Z. Attractions As A Whole Depicted’

The tourist attraction® of New Zealand as a whole are attractively depicted, with good balance, in the Government tourist offices in Sydney and Melbourne, the general manager of the Tourist and Publicity Department (Mr K. B. Longmore) has told the South Island Publicity Association.

Mr Longmore was replying to a complaint to the association that the “South Island is very poorly served by our Tourist Department in Sydney and Melbourne.” The complainant, in a letter to the association, forwarded to Mr Longmore, said he had come across several instances where intending visitors from Australia had had considerable difficulty in obtaining any information regarding the attractions of the South Island.

“One friend in Sydney, who was endeavouring to arrange a New Zealand itinerary in the Sydney office, was discouraged from visiting the South Island unless the party was interested in ski-ing, fishing or shooting.” The complainant wrote that other visitors from Melbourne, whom he met at the Hermitage during Labour Day week-end, said they found it very difficult to receive any advice of the South Island attractions.

“They were full of enthusiasm after having come to the South Island, and could not understand why our Melbourne office was either so badly informed or badly prejudiced.” In his reply, Mr Longmore said it was difficult to understand how the Melbourne visitors were in the South Island at all if they had been so badly informed by the Melbourne office, or if the Melbourne office was badly

prejudiced. It was apparent that the visitors had been booked in at the Hermitage and must have had an itinerary arranged well in advance to get in there on the Labour Day week-end. Mr Longmore said that he had recently visited both the Sydney and Melbourne offices and at both the tourist attractions of New Zealand were attractively depicted and with good balance.

“The service being given by our Australian offices, including Brisbane, is being continuously improved and extended,” Mr Longmore said.
