ROAD TUNNEL OPENING

Arrangements In Lyttelton

The Lyttelton Marine Band will march into the Christ-church-Lyttelton road tunnel and out again to “start things off"’ on Sunday, when the public are allowed to walk through the tunnel, the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. B. Collett) told the borough council on Monday evening. Members of the public could walk through the tunnel as often as they liked, in either direction, he told a questioner. Anyone who wished merely to walk a dozen yards in and then out again was quite at liberty to do so.

On February 27, the day of the official opening, the Lyttelton Main and West Schools would have a halfholiday, and he would send a circular to business people in the town inviting them to release their staffs also for half a day There was some discussion over decorations and a programme in Lyttelton for the evening of the opening day, out no decision was reached, and any programme will be notified later.
