La Scala Opera Contest

La Scala Opera, Milan, has opened a two-year contest, with composers everywhere eligible, for an unpublished new opera. The contest is named after Giacomo Puccini. The winner will get five million lire (about £2,860). A Puccini contest was held two years ago but there was no winner. The judges did not consider any of the works entered sufficiently outstanding. Entrants must send their work by the last day of 1965 to: Secreteria dell’ente Autonomo del Teatro Alla Scala (Secretary of Autonomous Agency of La Scala Theatre), via Filodrammatici 2, Milano. Competing composers must submit one orchestra score, two copies for piano and voice, and five copies of the libretto with a translation or extensive summary if not in Italian. The material must be anonymous, the composer using a motto in place of his name.
