REQUESTS REFUSED
Parties For Wapiti (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 16. A group promoting hunting and other sport applied unsuccessfully to Fiordland National Park Board at the week-end for permission to include the Wapiti region in two tours by overseas hunters booked last year by the Auckland firm in anticipation that the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association would no longer control wapiti shooting. It was reaffirmed by the board that private hunting parties could not enter the Wapiti region other than in the trophy season for which the 19 blocks available were balloted in December. The present situation would continue at least until the inquiry into deer control was made by the select committee. There was no indication of when the select committee of Parliament would meet, but the board was invited by the National Parks Authority to give advice by February 28 of latest thoughts on deer control. The authority, on behalf of all parks boards, was preparing a submission to put before the committee.
