12 OLYMPIC MEDALS
N.Z. Forecast For Tokyo (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TOKYO. Feb. 17. A former New Zealand sports commentator has predicted that New Zealand will win 12 medals in track and field events at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games next October, the Associated Press reported. Mr Gordon ' Dryden, from Auckland, told the “Asahi Evening News” that nine of the 12 medals would be won in the men’s middle and long distance competitions and three in women’s events. He claimed New Zealand’s middle and long distance runners were now the best in the world. He predicted that the Tokyo medal winners would be:— 800 and 1500 metres: P. G. Snell. 1500 metres: J. L. Davies. 5000 and 10,000 metres: M. G. Halberg. Marathon: J. L. Julian; A. B. . Magee. 10,000 metres and marathon: W. D. Baillie. Women’s discus: Mrs V. I, Young. Women’s 800 . metres! Miss M. A. M. Chamberlain. Women’s 100 metres: Miss D. H. Porter.
From Scratch.—The Australian professional cyclist, Sid Patterson, aged 36, made cycling history on Saturday when he became the first cyclist to win the Austral Wheelrace for the second time from . scratch. He won from scratch in 1962.—(N.Z.P.A.Reuter).
