RECOGNITION OF CHINA

Trade Pact Urged (N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, Feb. 17. The chairman of the New Zealand Federation of Farm Improvement Clubs (Mr A. G. Wood) of Papakura, has called for New Zealand recognition of Communist China. Mr Wood called for this recognition when delivering his address to the sixth annual conference of the federation in Hamilton.

“We should drop our foolish pretence that we fail to recognise Communist China and endeavour to bring about a trade agreement that will get us in on the ground floor with our foodstuffs for their teeming millions,” he said. “Tlie outstanding success of our trade with Japan is a classic example of the value of early recognition of the great potential of the Eastern markets.

“Our great traditional markets are unquestionably at saturation point and with the ever present threat of synthetics in competition with both wool and dairy produce we should leave no stone unturned to cultivate the great potential trade that exists throughout Eastern European and Asian countries. “If we, as farmers, are to keep our heads above the constantly recurring economic tidal waves, we must receive a great deal more than the merfe subsistance level of returns that has been a feature, unfortunately confined to our primary industries, for the past decade.’’
