READY-MIXED CONCRETE
Licence Granted For Transport It appeared that the company would do well with the licences granted, said the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood) granting an application by the Christchurch Ready-Mix Concrete, Ltd., Rangiora, for a new continuous goods service licence with five vehicles to carry wet ready-mixed concrete, together with exception from the 40-mile rail restriction in the area between Selwyn and Conway rivers.
A section of the application asking for permission to carry unmixed materials for concrete was not granted. Mr Haywood said that he had no doubt that if an application to carry unmixed dry materials was brought before the licensing authority it would be considered on its merits for a temporary licence. The applicant company was represented by Mr A. C. Fraser, and the Railways Department by Mr F. D. Daly. A director of the company, Mr R. W. Grant, said that the company had a fleet of trucks fitted with special concrete mixers in which batches were mixed during transit. In some cases water was added during transit. If ready-mixed concrete were carried by the railways it could not be watched during transit for evaporation of additives, said an engineer with the applicant company (Mr R. W. Wright). The concrete was mixed to 1 per cent accuracy.
