Claim By U.K. Newspaper

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 17.

The word “British” is to disappear from New Zealand passport covers, the “Sunday Express” said yesterday, because it creates discomfort for New Zealanders travelling through certain parts of Asia and Africa.

Embarrassed Government officials in Auckland this week-end reluctantly admitted that they found “British” had become a provocative word in certain areas, and no longer afforded adequate protection,, said the newspaper. The “Sunday Express” quoted a Foreign Office spokesman as saying: “This is the first we have heard of any change. But we have heard of cases where British citizens suffer inconveniences in countries where British policy, no matter how right it may be, has incurred displeasure.”

In Auckland on Sunday a Government spokesman said, according to the “Sunday Express”:

“New Zealand will drop the word British with no pleasure.

“But changes in the world today are such that we And it best to have just the country’s name on the cover . , . however British that country may be.”
