RACING Julloch Breaks Track Record At Westport

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, February 17. The Orari-trained Julloch, added an impressive win to an outstanding record on Patterson Parte when he took the main event at the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting today, the Morley Handicap. Julloch established a new track record of 2min 4 3-5 sec.

Julloch outclassed the opposition and won comfortably, reducing the previous best time by 3-ssec. Trained by L. H. Pratt for Mrs Pratt, the Tauloch—Lady Julia gelding has carried big weights with much success at several Westport meetings. He was confidently ridden by R. J. Skelton today.

On Account led out from Queen of Sheba, Julloch, Brown Watch, Silver Wood, Ups and Downs and Meandering. The others were strung out. The order was little changed at the mile, except that On Account had been displaced in the lead by Queen of Sheba. Picright and Foxy Boy were fairly well back.

Julloch took over at the straight entrance and won easily from Ups and Downs and Brown Watch. Foxy Boy finished on for fourth, ahead of Picright, Silver Wood, On Account, Meandering, Queen of Sheda, Golden Howe and Come On Boy. Just Won The favourite, Silver Shell, got up in the last stride in a thrilling finish to the second leg of the offcourse double, the Slee Handicap, to beat the early pace-maker, Awakeri, by a head. Cabalina, Grand Salute and Windsor Castle were almost in line, with less than half a length between them.

It was the Prize Money— Periwinkle gelding’s fourth win in succession for Mr W. R. Adamson, of Whataroa, and Dr. D. Hogg, of Wellington. He was turned out

in grand order by W. Dudley, of Totara Flat. The most prominent at the three furlongs were Awakeri, Grand Salute, Kabram, His Host, Prize Girl, Cabalina, Silver Shell and Windsor Castle. Rae’s Hope was at the rear. Grand Salute and Awakeri were disputing the lead at the straight entrance. Cabalina was handy. Silver Shell finished strongly to win from Awakeri and Cabalina. Grand Salute was fourth, ahead of Windsor Castle, Prize Girl, Lady Merling, Rae’s Hope, His Host, Windvale Lass, Kabram and Pepe. The double, Julloch and Silver Shell, paid £ll 16s for £l. Novice Stakes

Bona Fide, a good second in similar class on the opening day, won the Novice Stakes No. 1, in convincing style from Grand Harbour. The warm favourite, Llansfair, was a slightly disappointing third. Bona Fide was attended by Llansfair, Grand Harbour, Triple Link, Persian Sea and Scroll Beauty for most of the way. Llansfair drifted a little at the straight entrance and Bona Fide came on to win

narrowly but comfortably. Behind the placed horses came Persian Sea, Triple Link, Scroll Beauty and Dawning Sky. Beat Hacks The Greymouth mare, Silver Princess, won her second race of the season in the Joe Brown Handicap. She was never further back than second and won well from Baywyn and Garwan. Flaxman led for a good portion of the race. Silver Princess, Donna Gola, Baywyn, Prize Melody, and Margaret York were his closest attendants. Serengeti moved up at the two furlongs, but the order was otherwise little changed. Silver Princess took over soon after entering the straight and won nicely. Baywyn made up some ground for second. Garwan also made ground, but had finished his run short of the post. Then came Margaret York, Taxman, Lady Merling, Garwan, Prize Melody, Donna Gola. The others were strung out. Second Win The L. H. Pratt-R. J. Skelton combination made it two on end when Knight’s Review held off the win favourite, First Time, to win the Novice Stakes No. 2. The Knight’s Romance—Open Sky three-year-old held on well when challenged by First Time. He led from start to finish. The pair were well clear of Grand Harbour and Persian Sea, and then came Triple Link, Llanstar, Meadow Maid, Many More, and Isaac’s Gold.

Strong Finish Marlow came from well back to win the J. J. O’Donnell Handicap comfortably. He had been a close second to his stablemate, Race Guide, in a similar event on the opening day, but on this occasion Race Guide was beaten into fourth. Sumptuous and Blue Harken vied for the lead over the early stages with Race Guide, Matador, Tar Boy, Gold Shower, Aspasia, and Margaret York handy. Matador took over at the three furlongs mark and Aspasia moved forward to be on terms with Race Guide and Ben Blue, which were also handy. Matador still led to the straight entrance, but could not hold off the strong challenge from Marlow. Ben Blue was a close third, ahead of Race Guide, Gold Shower, Aspasia, Tarboy, Straight Forward, Margaret York, Blue Harken, and Sumptuous. Off-Course Bets £36,572 (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 17. The Totalisator Agency Board handled £36,572 5s on the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting today. Win and place investments were £18,526, and £18,046 5s was invested on doubles. The off-course substitute was the Rae’s Hope-Silver Shell bracket.
