By-Election To Govt.

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) HOBART, February 17. The governing Liberal Party has retained the Denison (Tasmania) seat in the first by-election it has faced since the General Election last November. The by-elec-tion was caused by the death of the Minister for Defence, Mr Athol Townley. With nearly all votes counted in Saturday’s byelection, the Liberal candidate, Mr Adrian Gibson, a solicitor, has a majority of more than 2500 over his Australian Labour Party opponent. Mr Townley had a majority of more than 4000.
