GEOTHERMAL POWER

More Research At Springs "The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, Feb. 16. Mere investigations into using geothermal power at Ngawha Springs, near Kaikohe, will be made by the Ministry of Works. The chief geothermal engineer (Mr J. H. Smith) said that deeper test bores would have to be drilled to find the potential of the steam resources. Some investigations had been made by the Department of Scientific and Tndustrial Research. Shallow holes had been drilled and temperature measurements taken. An examination had also been made of the earth structure. Mr Smith said it was hoped there would be sufficient steam available to provide a great deal of the future power requirements of North Auckland. The construction of a power station there would avoid the need to build more power transmission lines through Auckland.
