MR TENNENT PRAISED
Work For N.Z. Education The former Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) had obtained more for education than any other Minister since the late Mr Peter Fraser, says an editorial article in the February issue of the New Zealand Post-Primary Teachers’ Association’s journal. Mr Tennent resigned the portfolio recently because of ill health. "Our association certainly did not always see eye to eye with Mr Tennent; indeed, in at least one noticeable instance, it considered him unreasonable and ill advised. But it did appreciate his extensive knowledge of educational matters and his urgent concern to get things done. "His Government inherited a massive report on education produced by a commiss on appointed by its opponents. A less dedicated Minister would have looked for convenient pigeon-holes. “Not so Mr Tennent, who has obviously pressed Cabinet hard to implement most of the worthwhile recommendation of the Currie report without following it slavishly.” The editorial welcomed the appointment of the new Minister, Mr Kinsella, who, as a former teacher, “will bring to his office first-hand knowledge of the service and that can only be to its benefit.
