MAGISTRATE’S COURT Young Man Owned Up To Burglary Last Year

■Eric Ronald Alphonsus Gilligan-Kingsley, aged 23, a workman, was convicted and discharged by Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of breaking and entering “The Limes,” the property of the Diocese of Christchurch, on May 30 last year and stealing goods valued at £3O. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant V. F. Townshend said that the accused called at “The Limes” last week to admit responsibility for the burglary. He told the registrar that he wished to return the property he had taken, and that he wanted to settle down and lead a good life, in future. The Magistrate said he would take into account that the accused had volunteered the information about the crime. He would give him the chance he wanted. IDLE AND DISORDERLY . Tina Peterson, aged 23, unemployed, was remanded to February 19 for sentence when she pleaded guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly at Lyttelton on February 11. Sergeant Townshend said the -Lyttelton police saw the accused leave a hotel in a slightly intoxicated condition. When arrested she had 6d in her possession. She. was in an unkempt condition and admitted having spent the previous night in a foreign ship. .Appearing for sentence on a charge of being idle and disorderly at Amberley on February 4, Frederick Andrew Cumberbeach, aged 50, was convicted and discharged. CAR CONVERSION Richard David Stephen Heta, aged 21, a factory worker, pleaded guilty to the charge of converting a car valued at £BO on February 12. Sergeant Townshend said th® car was seen outside a city hotel after it was reported missing. The accused; who was in charge of the vehicle, was questioned but ran off. He later admitted taking the car. He was convicted and remanded in custody for sentence. REMANDED Cyril Victor Cronin, aged 39, charged with indecently assaulting a girl aged 12 on February 3. was remanded in custody until February 20. "COMMON PRACTICE” It was a common practice, but a wrong one, for drivers in 55-miles-an-hour areas to move to the middle of the road before making a right turn, but there was no element of recklessness in the defendant’s action, the Magistrate said when he fined Malcolm George Johnston £7 on a charge of careless use of a motor-vehicle on October 1. Johnston pleaded not guilty. The charge arose when a tractor driven by Johnston was turning from Memorial avenue into Wooldridge road. FINED £8

Anthony Joseph Cook was fined £8 and ordered to pay witnesses’ expenses of £3 on a charge of crossing against the traffic lights at the corner of Montreal and Tuam streets. He pleaded not guilty. LICENCE CANCELLED On a charge of careless driving in Riccarton road on October 5, lan Francis Burtt was fined £lO, and his driver’s licence was cancelled for six months. He did not appear. CHARGE DISMISSED A charge against Lodewijk Hendrekus Van Vuuren of proceeding from a stop sign at the corner of Glandovey and Idris roads on October 31 when the way was not clear was dismissed. A youth was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence when he pleaded guilty to a charge of committing a bestial act on December 29.
