SMALL TRADER PROTECTED
Legislation In Australia ■ Australian legislation aimed at protecting the small trader may spur the New Zealand Government into similar sensible thinking,” says the New Zealand Grocers’ Review."
Commenting bn recent legislation in South Australia, a leading article says: “It is refreshing to find a government which • is prepared to do someth-ng for the ‘small man,’ who offers a ■service to the public but whose very existence can be and invariably is jeopardised by the operations of supermarkets and multiples.” Two things which the South Australian Government has done deserve “careful consideration” .by our own Govment, the article says.
The first makes it an offence to offer goods for sale by retail, usually at or below cost, with a limit on the number of goods which may be bought at that price. “Similar legislation operates in California, and if it were enacted here it would very quickly put a stop to some of the unfair practices adopted- by certain -grocery organisations throughout New Zealand.”
The other legislation is against certain forms of advertising described as “fraudulent.” This, too, is desirable in New Zealand, the- article says.
