SWIMMING Another ‘No Race ’ At Wharenui

For the second time m three weeks the Wlianenui Coronation pool was the scene of a “mo race" during an interclub swarming carnival. Lssrt night, after three Canterbury representatives. W. R. Wd’lismson, G. R. Stringer and J. Hay. had swum in line z throughout the eight lengths of a men’s medley: event, the referee (Mr J. H. Johnsen) ruled that the three com'pe' ltors had net swum up to their C3p"bili*’es. Among the more wholehearted efforts of the evening was a successful solo attempt on the Canterbury under-14 girls’ record for 110yds breaststroke by Miss T. Jones (WhairenuD. Her time cf Imin 38.6ssc bettered , Miss G. Cormack’s existing mrirk by 2.1 see. Less than, half an hour I later Miss Jones was again ! in tjhe water, uneffk'ia'ly beating the. under-14 record for 220yds, established two years ago by Miss R. George. The centre women’s breaststroke champion. Miss M. Jones, faced a strong challenge from the former titleholder, Miss C. Hopper, over 220yrds and it was not until the final length that Miss Jones gained the advantage. But she had little mere than a second to spare at the finish. Miss A. Mitchell, the junior 110yds champion, also swam creditably in this event

Another keen contest was between Miss W. Dale, the senior backstroke champion, and Miss T. Slv'psiton, holder of the junior titles. In a race over 110yds, Miss Dale held the lead for two lengths and a half but her young rival

accelerated smoothly m th* last 20yds to farm the decision by half a second. Andrew’s Two Wins

There was interest in the appearance of W. G. Andrew, fresh from training in Auckland. He swam well within himself tor two good freestyle wins. But the most astounding freestyle swimming of tiie night came from his clubmate. Stringer, who. possibly stung by the ”no race" decision, hurled himself savagely into the pool durinc a relay event and swam as if possessed. In. two lengths he j brought his team from 10yds I behind to a yard in front and I Andrew’s sound swimming on 1 the last leg brought Wherenui j to victory.
