EXAMPLE FOR SMOKERS

Cabinet Sacrifice Suggested (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, January 22. Ministers should set an example and stop smoking, the Earl of Arran told the House of Lords yesterday. By this small act of sacrifice, he said, they could help to save thousands of lives. The Earl’s plea was rejected by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Health Ministry (Lord Newton). Lord Newton himself gave up smoking years ago. However, the advice he gave was: “To smoke or not to smoke is just as personal a matter for Ministers as it is for anybody else.” Liberal Lord Meston thought Ministers should be allowed to “smoke and drink and do what they damned well liked.”
