Fur Hats Arrive On 81-Degree Day
The long, slim finger of a dominating matriarch pointed firmly to the coming of winter in Christchurch yesterday, though it was one of the hottest days of summer. It was the guiding hand of High Fashion, persistent as ever in the reminder that seasons wait for no-one, moving into Beaths with an early consignment of fur hats for 1964.
Making the prospect of cold June days a pleasing thought even in January, youthful berets in fox and lynx, rich brown marmot pillboxes, and sophisticated black fur semi-bowlers suddenly made shady summer straws, worn along the blistering street, seem incongruously “old hat” These fur bats, which; will be introduced in Christchurch soon for the new season, are identical to the styles now being worn in any of the icy capitals of Europe and the United States. They are snug and warm, chic and designed to flatter. Picture Style Most are small and headhugging, suitable for wearing with a deep-collared topcoat. Some, however are an elegant picture hat in brown with a mink crown and stitched velvet brim. As a contrast in size is an open-top pillbox of mink tails. Heavy satin is often teamed with fur to make the tiny rolled brim of a bowler or the headband of a deep pillbox. A black pony skin cloche has also been given a satin brim. Natural rabbit, with a new status in 1964, holds its own
with silvery fox and lynx for berets. Persian lamb is another favourite for deepcrowned styles with roll-up brims.
Imitation ocelot mounted on foam rubber claims special notice for its pack-and-travel qualities in bowler and Garbo shapes. Known as the “year-rounder,” this combination can be thrown into a full suitcase and will spring back into shape without the hint of a crease when needed. Man-made calf-skin in tan and white and black and white also appears on foam rubber backing in bowler and pull-on styles. This full range of fur hats was made in New Zealand under licence from Lish Brothers, the biggest firm of millinery manufacturers in the United States.
