tenders INDUS BASIN PROJECT WEST PAKISTAN WATER AND POWER DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY ADVANCE NOTICE OF INTENTENT TO INVITE TENDERS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF CANALS AND APPURTENANT WORKS THE above Authority is undertaking the construction of a number of large canals in West Pakistan. The canals, which form a part of the works embodied in the Indus Basin Settlement Plan will have a total length of about 390 miles and involve approximately 345 million cubic yards of excavation as well as the construction of several hundred bridges and other canal structures. The work has been divided into eight individual projects, the first three of which are presently under construction. Previously prequalified contractors have already submitted tenders for the fourth canal and will be invited to tender, for the fifth canal early this year. It is intended that the sixth and seventh projects will be financed through the Indus Basin Development Fund, the operation of which is administered by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank). The sixth project to be undertaken will be the remodelling of the first fifteen! miles of the existing BallokiSuleimanke Link which offtakes from Ballokl Barrage on the Ravi river, and the construction of Balloki-Suleimanke Link II Canal which will offtake from Mile 15 of the existing Balloki-Suleimanke Link Canal. The remodelling of the existing Balloki-Suleimanke Link Canal will consist of widening the bed width of the existing channel for an increaser capacity in order to command the new Balloki-Suleimanke Link II Canal and the setting back of the spoil banks. The remodelling will involve approximately 3.5 million cubic yards of excavation for widening of the channel and approximately 5 nullion cubic yards of excavation for setting back of spoil banks. It is not required that existing structure be remodelled. The construction of the new Balloki-Suleimanke Link II Canal (which will run parallel to the existing link for a distance of approximately 38 miles to the Sutlej river) will consist of the construction of an unlined channel with a capacity of 6500 cusecs. Its construction will involve approximately 18 million cubic yards of excavation and construction of some 44 structures such as regulators. bridges, aqueducts and siphons. The seventh project will be the Cashma-Jhelum Link Canal which will offtake from the pond of the proposed Chasma Barrage to be located on the Indus river near the town of Kundlan and will extend southeast for a distance of approximately 63 miles to the Jhelum river. This canal will have a capacity of 21,700 cusecs and will be unlined. Its construction will involve approximately 119 million cubic yards of excavation, nearly one-third of which will be wet, and the construction of some 60 structures such as regulators, bridges, aqueducts and drainage inlets. The Authority plans to call for tenders for the construction of the Balloki-Suleimanke Link II in the spring of 1964 and for the construction of the ChasmaJhelum link in the summer of 1964. Only contractors who have been prequalified by the Authority will be invited to submit tenders.
