YACHTING TAURANGA CUP

Gap Narrows At Top "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Jan. 24. In light, flukey conditions which should have suited the local competitors, outsiders, including two Nelson boys, performed very creditably on the second day of the Tauranga Cup P Class yachting contest on the Waitemata harbour yesterday. Victories by R. Webber, who sails on the Manaku harbour, and by J. Leydon. a 6st 31b competitor from Worser Bay, Wellington, reduced the margin to almost nothing between the leaders, and brought the field closer together. R. Granic, the overnight leader by 55 points, now leads from another Aucklander, B. Blake, by less than two points. In the morning race, the Nelson boys, S. Scott and T. Gould, stuck together in very light conditions to finish fifth and sixth respectively. In the afternoon Gould joined four other “outside” boats in sailing up-harbour while the rest of the fleet went into the middle. The fleet became becalmed and Gould sailed home second behind Leydon to raise himself to seventh position on aggregate. D. Le Page, of Mount Pleasant, gained a further placing in the afternoon, but the other Canterbury competitors, P. Baillie and Miss S. Curry, were well back each time. Results were:— Third Race.—R. Webb (French Bay). 1: B. Blake (Kohimaramal. 2t A. Holt (New Plymouth), 3; R. Granic (Victoria), 4: S. Scott (Aurora), 5; T. Gould (Pohara Beach), 6. Fourth Race.—J. Leydon (Worser Bay). 1: Gould, 2; T. Berry (R Class Squadron), 3; A. Cooney (Tauranga), 4: Blake. 5; J. Newton (Point Chevalier), 6. Aggregate: Granic, 201.76 Soints, 1: Blake, 200.00. 2; Weber. 164.29. 3; Cooney, 151.11, 4; G. Davis (Ponsonby), 146.60, 5; Leydon, 141.33, 6.

Rats, mice, cats, dogs and rainy weather have been guilty of setting off burglar alarms in Johannesburg and causing extra work for the city’s flying squad.
