Diplomacy—And Home Truths

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

SYDNEY, January 24. The manager of the victorious Australian Rugby League team, Mr J. Lynch, said on the tourists return to Sydney today that he regarded, diplomacy as the No. 1 essential quality for a team manager. “I found diplomacy a great help during our tour overseas,” he said. “Future team managers

must know everything about football, about business and about refereeing, but diplomacy is really No. 1.

“Of course, we encountered many amazing obstacles—like the referee named Clay in the third test in England. “When I stood up in front of all the English officials during the presentation ceremony and said.it was a ‘frightful ex-

hibition of refereeing.’ I meant it.

“I thought Clay’s refereeing was ‘too blatant’ and ‘too obviols’ and I told them so.”

Mr Lynch was asked if this were practising diplomacy. “It was speaking a few home truths,” he replied. “These things had to be said, and I guesse that I was the one to say them. After all, I’m manager.”
