Otago Retains " Wooden Spoon”

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Jan. 24. Otago took the “wooden spoon” for Plunket Shield cricket for the third successive season when it lost to Central Districts outright at Carisbrook today. The scheduled three-day match ran for only 11 hours, and in that tipae Otago was dismissed twice, for 95 and 82, while Central Districts scored 119 and 61 for three wickets The wicket was plumb for the two days’ play and it was only poor batting which caused the collapses experienced by both teams. With scores as low as this bowlers must claim attention. and it was Central Districts’ B. L. Hampton and Otago's F. J. Cameron who were outstanding. Hampton had the better figures: 18 overs. 14 maidens, seven runs, six wickets. But it was Cameron who bowled

the better. In a nine-over spell he took four for six, and bowled with extreme fire. Many of Hampton’s wickets were catches, caused by unsure batsmen poking and the eager fielding accepting. Central, 79 for six overnight, had to struggle to pass Otago’s 95, then, with a fine last-wicket stand between M. Chapple (22 not out) and D. Kinsella (13), gained a 24-run lead.

Otago began badly, losing J. R. Veitch and R. A. Holloway for 23 runs, but R. Hendry and S. N. McGregor looked capable of seeing their side to a big score. But this was not to be. McGregor patted a ball back to Hampton, who took a running caught and bowled, then L. R. Pearson and G. D. Alabaster both failed to score. Hendry and R. Stewart added 20 runs before four more wickets fell without addition. In the final total of 82, Hendry made 36. Central needed only 59 runs to win and hit these off, for the loss of three wickets. B. M. J. Dineen scored 20 in an aggressive knock and D. G. Beer 15.
