EXPLOSION RISK
Tanker Repair Held Up (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Jan. 24. Because of the danger of an explosion, repair work stopped today on the Caltex Leiden, which is berthed at the Dunedin oil wharf. Gas fumes from the tanks had reached a dangerous level. A representative of the shipping agents said that all welding work had been stopped because tests had shown that the fumes had reached a level slightly above the safety mark. “The needle was only just over the mark but the oil companies have strict safety limits and we would not take the risk of having men down there,” he said. He added that the decision was merely routine. Hourly Tests Tests would be taken at hourly intervals and work could be resumed when it was safe to do so. One of the main reasons for the density of gas fumes was the exceptionally warm weather today. If it had been cold the problem would probably not have arisen. Only about 12 hours work remains to be done in repairing the tanker, which suffered damage to her hull in heavy weather recently.
