LONG BREAK TO END
Resumption Of Competitions Senior inter-club lawn tennis matches will be resumed at Wilding Park tomorrow after a break of nearly two months. The lengthy period of inactivity, unfortunate for the average senior player who has not been a tournament entrant, has had several causes including rain, provincial matches and senior and junior tournaments ■held in various parts of the Dominion. Only three instead of five rounds of the senior competitions have been held. With only five teams, the women’s competition is not badly affected. The men’s competition has eight teams, so four more days are required before the scheduled section play can begin. On December 21, the two leading men’s teams. Edgeware and Woolston, with 44 and 43 points respectively, were to have met, as were the two teams with 31 points, United and Beckenham. This would have brought an important sorting out which may not now occur until that postponed round is held at the end of the draw.
Tomorrow’s games are unlikely to bring much difference, when the draw is:—Edgeware (44) v. Cashmere (5); Woolston (43) v. University (14); United (31) v. North Linwood (5); and Beckenham (31) v. Elmwood (19). In the women’s competition, Cashmere (28) will play Shirley (15): and United (8) will meet Avonside (17). Cashmere. Shirley and Avonside have already had their byes and Fendalton will have a bye this time.
