Third-Day Lots

WELLINGTON, January 23. , , total of 326,464gns was spent in the purchase of thoroughbreds at the three-day National Sales which concluded at 1 rentham today. Of this total the modest outlay on the third day was 19,539gns for 61 mixed lots, comprising yearlings, brood mares and tried and untried racing stock.

The supplementary draw of yearlings for the third day comprised lots which vendors considered might not be up to the required standard for the main draw made for the first two days of the sales.

There were 39 lots offered in this run and 28 were sold for 7470gns at an average of 267|gns. The top price was 725gns, which the Sydney trainer, T. J. Smith, gave for a filly by Le Filou from Saratu, offered by Mr J. L. Macky, Pirongia Stud, Te Awamutu.

The filly is a threequarter blood sister to the Great Northern Derby and New Zealand St. Leger winner, Cracksman.

Five other yearlings went to Australian buyers, mostly fit low prices compared with the high level of values obtained in the main sale on the first two days. The bulk of the catalogue for the summer sale of mixed racing stock comprised brood mares find 17 of these sold for 7010 gns. Top Mare The top price was 2000 gns which the Sevenoaks Stud. Blenheim, paid for Dark Noon, an 11-year-old mare by Midday Sun out of Black Melody by Gold Nib. She carried a positive pregancy test to the top sire Summertime. The only other big price for brood mares was 1100 gns which Wright. Stephenson and Co., Auckland, gave for the English mare Atlantico, by Como from Lily-Lee. by Alycidon, offered by the Yendarra Stud, Auckland. The mare had a colt foal at foot by Alcastus (a son of Alycidon) and had been served by Comte De Grasse. The Australians took four of the brood mares. The top price among their lots was 500 gns which the Mebourne •gent, Mr M. Marshall, gave

for Little Mo, a black mare by Targui out of Tene by Ringmaster. She carried a positive pregnancy test to Rawalpindi II and was offered by Mr W. R. Stead. The Melbourne trainer, R. Wallis, gave 475 gns for the

Balloch mare Ermengold, which had a positive pregnancy test to Alcimedes. She is the dam of Voltaire and was offered by the West Derby Stud. Filly Sold The best price among eight lots of racing stock sold was 1150 gns for the three-year-old filly Pin, by Faux Tirage from Green Note, by Paper

Money, offered by her breeder, Mr T. C. Lowry. She was bought by Mr K. Cameron, of Tokcroa.

Big Bill, winner of the W. R. C. Watkins Handicap and the Wanganui Gold Cup, was sold for 400 gns, the low price probably being accounted for by a splint. He was one of several offered to wind up the estate of his breeder, the late Mr W. L. Gabites.

Miss Crate, a six-year-old mare, was bought by the Preston stable for 500 gns. She was a winner on the flat and was bought with a jumping career in view.

The good performer Equal Terms, a nine-year-old entire by Fair’s Fair out of Glamor Girl, was passed in at 300 gns.

It was announced that the reserve was 3000 gns. Equal Terms, which was offered on behalf of Messrs P. J. and W. Smith, of Wanganui, won 15 races including the Wanganui and Hawke’s Bay Guineas. He covered seven mares ti is season.
