Fan Belt Care

Few things can annoy and inconvenience a motorist more than a broken fan belt. Care in fitting a belt can prevent a lot of trouble. The fan pulleys should always be aligned correctly so that the belt runs straight without being worn unduly. A belt should never be levered over the pulleys. The ajustment should be slackened off until the belt can be placed in position by hand pressure. The belt should be properly tensioned. It should “give” between Jin and gin on its longest run when it is pressed in firmly. As oil and grease will damage any fan belt keep the belt clean, and see that any oil leakages are rectified. Vsection belts are designed to grip at the sides. Such belts should never make contact with the bottoms of the pulley grooves. If the bottom of a groove becomes shiny, indicating that a belt has made contact, either the belt is worn and needs replacing or a belt of the wrong size has been used. Cracks, loose strands of cord or excessive wear on the V faces are signs that you should fit a new belt before the old one breaks. As a final precaution, always carry a spare belt, just in case.
