FLIGHTS TO NOUMEA

£39 More On New Route (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 23. The last U.T.A.-Air France DC4 flight direct to Noumea will take off from Whenuapai at 5 p.m. tomorrow. Unless there is a new development arising from talks between the French and New Zealand Governments, air travellers between New Zealand and New Caledonia will have to fly through Nandi, Fiji. The general manager of U.T.A. in New Zealand (Mr H. Sigerist) said today that the last flight from Noumea, which would arrive at 3 p.m. tomorrow, should clear all the New Zealand tourists remaining there. The return flight should perform a similar service for a number of New Caledonian visitors to New Zealand. He said U.T.A. would maintain its sales offices in Auckland and Wellington without paying off any staff. Because there was now no air connexion between Australia and New Caledonia, New Zealanders wishing to fly there would have to connect with the U.T.A. DCB service at Nandi at a cost of about £lOO return compared with £6l on the direct DC4 return flight.

Until the situation was clearer, it was not known whether a comparable excursion fare—until today £40 — could be instituted, said Mr Sigerist.
