SURF BOARD RIDERS
Restrictions In Sydney (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY. January 17. Sydney board riders can lose their boards for three months if they surf in prohibited areas. All boards are licensed in Sydney—a fee of 10s a year—and beach inspectors and life-savers can impound them. A rider’s first offence in being outside a restricted area means he can lose his board for seven days. A second offence means his board can be impounded for 21 days, and a third offence warrants three months. The Newcastle City Council last year wanted to make it compulsory for board riders to wear inflatable life vests. There has been an outcry from some sections of the public who want board riders to carry compulsory third party insurance against accidents. Three people were killed in surf board accidents off Sydney beaches last season, and many had serious injuries.
