HORSE FREED FROM DRAIN

Breakdown Truck Solves Problem "The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, Jan. 13. It took six persons and a breakdown truck 90 minutes to free a horse from a narrow drain at New Plymouth. The horse, 12-year-old Jimmy, the pet of Brenda Mauriri, also 12, fell into the drain in his grazing paddock near Ngamotu Beach. Jimmy's plight was noticed by Mr A. E. Daily at 730 a.m. The horse was groaning as he struggled vainly to free himself from the oozing mud and filth of the narrow trap. Efforts to free the horse I without machinery failed because of his weight and near exhaustion. Then Brenda’s father, Constable P. Mauriri, called in a tractor, but the roped horse slithered and stumbled, and that attempt also failed. The last resource was a garage breakdown truck. Ropes were tied round the horse’s body, the truck inched forward, the helpers pushed Jimmy from behind, and in a few minutes he was free. Tired and nervous, he stood, shaking, while the ropes were untied. For 10 minutes Brenda led him quietly round the paddock, and then he was taken to the beach to clean and refresh himself in the surf.
