Tunnel Road Opening
Sir, —When the tunnel road is opened by the Queen Mother on February 27, will old identities of Lyttelton be included in the ceremony? There is one person here whose parents were at the opening of the Lyttelton railway tunnel. This person is probably the oldest person living who was bom in the town. It would be a nice gesture to include old identities at this historic function.—Yours, etc., JUST WONDERING. December 30, 1963. [The general manager of the Road Tunnel Authority (Mr L. H. Wilson) said: “The authority is endeavouring to have all sections of the community represented on the official invitation list. It would be an impossibility to issue invitations to all who would wish to be present The Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers’ Association will have representatives, but the number has to be restricted as with other organisations. A general invitation is, however, extended to the general public to be present and, in spite of the apparent restricted area, it will be possible to provide space for
a large number of people on the hillside immediately overlooking the Heathcote portal area where the Queen Mother will perform the opening ceremony.”]
