TO TEACH IN TONGA
Mercy Nuns From Christchurch The first four New Zealand sisters of the Order of Mercy to work in the Pacific mission will leave for Tonga next week. All are from the Diocese of Christchurch, and were presented with mission crosses by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch • (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce) in a special service at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on Sunday evening. They are Sister Mary Pius Duffy, Sister Mary Lucy O'Malley. Sister Mary Juliana Gallagher, and Sister Mary Genevieve Tunnel. The nuns are to teach at a school in Lapaha, on the island of Tonga Tapu, and will also do some social work among the natives. Several other orders of nuns are working in the Pacific, but this is the first missionary undertaking in the area of the Order of Mercy. The sisters will be working in the vicariate of the Most Rev. J. H. Rogers, a New Zealander. Another New Zealander working in Tonga is the Rev. D. Mullins. Father Mullins belongs to Christchurch.
