U.K. Wait On Recognition

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, January 13. British Government decisions on recognition of the new revolutionary Government in Zanzibar would have to await clarification of the situation on the island, officials said today. The British Government would have to be assured that the new regime had fully effective control. The swift coup which toppled the coalition Government of Sheikh Mohammed Shamte yesterday came as a surprise to the British Government.

The Commonwealth Relations Secretary (Mr Sandys) and officials are now studying the implications of the revolt. A Commonwealth Relations Office spokesman said: “We are waiting to see how the situation develops.”
