Steam Firing For Missiles
(N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
CAPE KENNEDY Jan. 13.
The United States Navy’s latest-type submarine used a revolutionary steam ejection system for the first time today to fire two Polaris missiles. The first 30-foot missile burst through the surface of the ocean on a column of steam but failed to ignite on the second stage a minute later and the rocket fell into the Atlantic.
The United States submarine, Nathan Hale, fired later another 15-ton rocket which streaked about 1500 miles down the missile range. The steam ejection system replaces the compressed air method, and is considered safer.
Steam eliminates the need for storing compressed air bottles aboard the submarines, always cramped for space.
