FUND FOR WIDOW
Man Died In Rescue Attempt (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 14. The Mayor of Auckland (Mr D. M. Robinson) today opened a relief fund to assist the widow and family of Cornelius Johannes Rieke who, with Richard Guy Pilling, gave his life at Bethell’s Beach on December 29 in an attempt to save other swimmers from drowning. Mr Robinson said that in making his noble effort to save the lives of others, Mr Picke was well aware of the dangers and entered the water in spite of warnings of grave risk to his own life. “In have investigated the circumstances of the Picke family,” he said, “and I am satisfied that, if the public do not come to their aid immediately, they will suffer grave hardship.” Mr and Mrs Robinson opened the fund with a donation of £25.
Satisfactory.— The condition of John Lyttelton, son of Lord Cobham, is satisfactory, the Wellington Hospital reported yesterday. He was injured at the week-end when his car was in a smash in Tinakori road. —(P.A.)
