CONVERSION OF TUG
Kumea To Be Oyster Dredger The conversion of a former Greymouth tug into an oyster dredger for Foveaux Strait, is now wsH in hand at Lyttelton. The 63-ton Kumea, whidi began her career in Auckland 30 years ago, was purchased by Fisheries (South Island), Ltd., and brought to Lyttelton last May and should be ready for service early next month. During her stay in port, she has been stripped right down to the open hull. A now turbo charged marine diesel engine has just been fitted, a Kelvin 320 h.p. T.S.B model, capable of 1000 r.pm. A new bronze, ,three-bladed propeller has replaced the former fourbladed one. The original wheelhouse has now been reshipped. and several structural alterations have been carried ou tabove deck. A new echo sounder, life rafts and an oyster dredging winch have been fitted. Raised bulwarks, oyster sorting benches and a new funnel are other additions. The original mast has been replaced by one from the former coastal motor-vessel, Motu. Interestingly enough, the Mptu’s other mast is also in an oyster dredger down south, the Golden Lea. A master for the Kumea, Mr J. Jamieson, of Bluff, and a deckhand, are at Lyttelton.
