(H2. Prtss AsaociaOon—Copyright) SAN DIEGO, January 13. The British Open champion, R. J. Charles, of New Zealand, tied with three other players for fourth place in the San Diego tournament yesterday. His final round 66 was the best of the day. The title was won by Art Hall who staved off a late challenge by Tony Lerna.

Wall, who is aged 40, shot a par 70 for a 72-hole total of 274 to win his first major victory since the 1980 Canadian open. Lema finished second in a two-way tie with Bob Rosburg at 278. Lema had five birdies in his back run of 30. Wall shot a one-under par 34 on the first nine and finished with a 36 as he took a bogey on the last hole. In a four-way tie for fourth place were Charles, the young professional George Archer, Rex Baxter and Harold Kosle. Each had 277 totals. Ray Floyd had 278 while Al Geiberger and Jerry Barber finished with 279*8. Wall won 4000 dollars, Lema and Rosburg 2300 dollars each, and the fourth placers 1530 dollars each. Charles commented: *1 had a good go at it, but I lost any chance when I made one-over pars on twopar 3 holes, the second and eleventh. “For a change I made enough birdies but I was plugged twice in the bunkers on the 173-yard second and 209-yard eleventh. I was

barely able to get out both times. “I started with a nice birdie on one with about a 25 footer. “I also birdied eight with a three-yarder and the par-5 ninth with a four-footer. I birdied the fourteenth with a three-yarder, the fifteenth with a four-footer and the par-5 seventeenth with a fivefooter,” said Charles. His halves were 33-33.
