Trentham Win Would Bring Up £40,000

Mr D. W. Brown, owner-trainer of Great Sensation, hopes to see his old champion advance his stake earnings to £40,000. But he also wants to see the horse finish his racing “on four legs.”

Mr Brown said at Riccarton yesterday that his decision against starting Great Sensation in the Wellington Cup with 9-12 came from his keenness to see his horse go into retirement “as sound as a bell,” as he is at present.

Mr Brown will take Great Sensation north tonight. The horse will lead the parade for the Wellington Cup—a race he won three times—on Saturday, and a week later he will run in the weight-for-age Trentham Stakes. A Trentham Stakes victory would carry Great Sensation’s earnings past £40,000. It is worth £ 1625 to the winner, and Great Sensation’s earnings so far are £36,943. Otago representation in the Wellington Cup this year rests with Palisade and Woodcock. They earned starts in the Trentham two-miler by running first and second far ahead of Great Sensation in the Dunedin Cup on December 26. Tf he travels as well between the two islands as he obviously did at the week-end Palisade will be one of the flttest-looking horses in the Wellington Cup parade. Palisade was given light exercise at Riccarton yesterday and will be taken north this evening with his stable* mate, Warfare. In his first try at two miles, Palisade ran fourth in the last New Zealand Cup. His Wingatui trainer, D. P. Wilson, said he would have liked to give the Ruthless gelding another race before the New Zealand Cup. The horse, he said, could have been “one short." A week later Palisade won ■the C.J.C. Metropolitan in sound style. Then he was freshened and' campaigned at Wingatui for his Dunedin Cup win and a third in the James Hazlett Gold Cup.
