tach, Ashleigh and Royal Pic. The latter was in front with half the journey covered. His nearest opponents were AshLeigh.. Lola, Julloch and Red Jimmy. Ups and Downs went into the lead within the next furlong and rounding the home turn she was well clear of her rivals. She was not troubled in the run down the straight to win by two lengths. Foxy Boy, one of the lightweights, finished well over the concluding stages but was two lengths behind the winner. There were similar margins tb Lola and Shalom. The top-weight Julloch was fifth, then came Red Jimmy, Totara Lass, Royal Pic,. Ashleigh, Meandering, and Master Conclusion. Strong Finish Aspasia had proved at Reefton that She was a most determined finisher. In the Fox Glacier Hack Handicap she finished very strongly to win going away from Crackers, which had attempted to lead from the half-mile. Rae’s Hope set the early pace, from Crackers, Beach Gold, Rajah, Ben Blue and ! Blue Harken. With half a mile to run, Crackers joined Rae's Hope and then led the field round the bend to lead inz) file straight from a well bunched field in which three lengths would have covered the lot. Just when Crackers looked likely to win Aspasia swooped down on him to gain first money by half a length. Blue Harken finished a little better than Beach Gold to be threequarters of a length from Crackers. He gained third by half a head from Rajah. Ben Blue and Rae’s Hope were next

Outsider’s Win

The Otira Hack Handicap, second leg of the on-course double, was won well by Star Malden, one of the lesserfancied candidates. Taxman led out, from Serengeti, Star Maiden, Silver Princess and Ben Blue. At the three furlong post Star Maiden had assumed command from Taxman, Serengeti, Silver Princes, Prize Melody and Ben Blue. In the run home Star Maiden held on to win by three-quarters of a length from Prize Melody, which beat Serengeti by a neck for third. Silver Princess was a length further back fourth and then came Ben Blue, Taxman, Tar Boy, Patrician and Mystic. The final event, the Harihari Hack Handicap, was won well by Silver Shell, which had also been successful at Reefton.. Cabalina was first out, from His Host, Awakeri, Silver Shell, Star Maiden and Lady DenziL With three furlongs to go Cabalina was showing the way to Silver Shell. The latter had assumed command ait the two-furlong post and he was first into the straight. Silver Shell went on to win by a length and a half from Star Maiden. Cabalina weakened to be a length behind the second horse. His Host was a poor fourth. Behind him came Lady Denzil, Awakeri, Patrician and Star of Athens. Maiden Events The Hokitika Stakes No. 1 provided an interesting contest between Kummel and Prize Girl, in which Kummel won by a head in an all-out finish. Prize Girl, the topweight, registered a good performance. She had galloped a round of the track while doing her preliminary. Prize Giri was the early leader by a couple of lengths from Kummel, with Colleen Gael and Grand Harbour together three lengths back. The field started to dose up rounding the home bend and Prize Girl and Kummel entered the straight on terms. In a great race home Kummel just managed to gain a slight advantage. Grand Harbour was a length back third, three lengths in front of Colleen Gael Prize Duval and Glen Mist were beaten off. Prize Girl made amends to the Hokitika Stakes No. 2 with a very good effort She ran wide but down the

straight but finished on gamely to hold off the very fast finishing Glen Mist.

After two furlongs, Prize Girl and Belle York were out by four lengths from Grand Harbour, Kummel and Colleen Gael. Prize Girl led into the straight then she and Belle York ran wide. Belle York faded. The top-weight went on to win by a length and a half from Glen Mist, which had been last at the two-furlong post. Colleen Gael was a length behind Glen Mist Belle York was a neck away, then came Kummel, Grand Harbour and Prize Duval. Results:— HOKITIKA STAKES NO. 1, £130; about 6f.—3/2 KUMMEL (8) 8-5 E. G.
