Increase For Second Year (N.Z.P^I.-Reuter—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Jan. 13. Zinc Corporation, Ltd., the largest of live four mines on the Broken Hill field, lifted production for the second successive year in 1963. Associate company, New Broken Hill Consolidated, Ltd., also reported an increase although recoveries of lead and silver did not increase at the same rate as in 1962.
Zinc Corporation treated 911,436 tons ore compared with 805,110 tons in 1962. Output ot gross lead rose sharply from 104,660 tons to 121,642 tons. Silver production rose by about 273,000 ounces to 2,668,082 ounces and zinc concentrate by about 14,000 tons to 153,811 tons. C.R.A. reported in their half-yearly review that the mine had increased its contribution to group earnings in the first half of the year following higher production and selling prices. New B.H. treated 779,644 tons of ore in 1963, a rise of 58,000 tons compared with the 1962 level which, in turn, was 55,000 tons higher than in 1961. Zinc concentrate, which had fallen in 1962, recovered by 10,000 tons to 158,681 tons. During the year production of gross lead was 95,902 tons —a rise of 5000 tons compared with a 9000 tons rise in 1962. Output of silver, which had almost doubled in 1962, rose by only 100,000 ounces to 2,441,825 ounces. As its name implies, New Broken Hill is the newest Barrier Mine and much of its development has taken place post-war.
